Today’s organizations constantly face challenges, which threaten to reduce their effectiveness. Unless they are properly dealt with, they can cause serious damage in the long run. Particularly, in the field of IT, we are often met with the following problems:

  • After going through the entire process of developing and implementing an IT solution, we find that there is a huge gap between the original specifications and the resulting system.
  • It is hard to answer the question: how the systems in the organization’s IT infrastructure support the business processes? As a result, it is difficult to tell if the IT is managed efficiently.
  • Employees do not understand how their work benefits the organization and how it is related to the work of their colleagues. As a result they cannot perform their duties in an optimal way.
  • Changes in one system or component lead to failure in other parts of the IT infrastructure.
  • Introducing change is more likely to be carried out as a long chain of trial and error activities, rather than a well-understood, controlled and predictable process.
  • When an employee leaves the organization, the valuable information about the systems he worked with and the tasks he performed, also leaves the organization.

Enterprise architecture (EA) is a proven instrument, which can help address and solve such problems. It can help the organization better understand its own structure and its relations to the environment. EA also helps reveal and document the internal processes and how they relate to each other. A successful implementation of EA usually leads to improvements in decision-making, planning and implementing change, command and control, transparency and communication. When applied to the external environment, EA can help the organization better understand its clients and how it can more effectively respond to their specific needs. EA is flexible and can be implemented by both large and small organizations. It can bring the organization to a new level of maturity and become a competitive advantage, which cannot easily be copied or imitated.

Cel szkolenia

To introduce the participants to the field and also to make it possible for them to continue their studies in a course on the practitioner level. After successfully finishing the course, each attending participant will:

  • Understand the basic principles and processes.
  • Be able to explain how EA can be beneficial to his/her organization. Particularly how it can improve decision-making, command and control and solutions development.
  • Gain foundation knowledge of the main standards and instruments in the field.
  • Be able to start working as a junior member in a project which involves EA.
  • Be able to further his/her studies in a course on the AMSIS practitioner level (TOGAF and ArchiMate).

  • Introduction
    • Introduction to the course. Overview of the main concepts, which will be used in the course. Introduction to the benefits of EA. This part of the course includes topics from knowledge management, and information theory.
  • Context
    • Explain how EA fits into the decision-making processes in the organizations and also in the development and management of IT solutions. This part of the course includes topics from organizational theory. It also covers certain topics related to the development of IT solutions.
  • Architecture Frameworks (AF)
    • Explain the concepts of AF. Introduce the Zachman Framework. Introduce the DoDAF framework.
  • ISO/IEC 42010.
    • Introduce the standard. Explain its significance. Overview of the included information.
  • Methods and Architecture Description Languages (ADL)
    • Explain the concept of Methods and ADL. Explain how they are related to the collection and management of information for the needs of the architecture description. Specific standards, which are covered in this section are UML, ArchiMate and IDEF.
  • Information Products
    • Introduce the concept of information product. Introduce standards, which govern the contents of information products. Introduce specific human cognitive characteristics, which must be taken into account in the process of developing an architecture. Introduce the Meyer and Zack model.
  • Software instruments
    • Introduce certain specifics of the software solutions used to support EA in the organizations. Demonstrate specific software solutions.
  • Architecture development methods
    • Introduce two methods for development of architectures – DoDAF’s 6-Step Architecture Development Process and TOGAF’s Architecture Development Method (ADM).
  • Examples
    • Examine and explain architecture description examples.
