Course description

During the training participants will learn the functioning and implementation of the P3O® standard of Portfolio, Programmes and Project Offices.

The lecture presents the principles of actively drawing value from change initiatives and identifies the role of P3O in their completion. We discuss the types of value P3O will bring to an organisation: “legislative” - by setting portfolio, programme and project management standards and rules, “policing” - by enforcing the observance of those rules and monitoring progress, “support” - by providing direct support for portfolios, programmes and projects through professional services (we will present what services can these be).

We will describe the functioning P3O in the form of a POTI model, where: P means Processes - e.g. related to the supported portfolio, programme and project governance, O means Organisation - a description of functions and roles within P3O itself, as well as its system of offices, T means Techniques and Tools of the trade, I means Information - any information flow related to the integrated governance.

We will present various P3O models for small, medium and large organisations, conducting a variety of business activities. We will explain the criteria of selecting an appropriate model and services provided by P3O for organisations that we can design ourselves.

Finally, we will provide guidelines for implementing P3O in an organisation. It can be said that the implementation will be an evolutionary change, performed in discreet steps, and therefore the best approach is to use a programme managed with the use of the MSP methodology. We will show you how to conduct such a permanent P3O implementation programme and how to avoid typical mistakes. Finally, we will discuss temporary P3O lifecycle - how can temporary Programme and Project Offices support the lifecycles of programmes and projects.

Training objectives

The purpose of the training is to provide in-depth knowledge of the functioning and implementation of Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices, so that candidates can pass the Foundation Exam and successfully implement the business change governance in their organisations.

Target group

The training is aimed at people who:

  • participate in project or programme execution in various roles and/or support the management of portfolios of organisational changes,,
  • want to improve the effectiveness of their organisations in completing business changes,
  • are fascinated with such governance standards, as PRINCE2, MSP, MoP and require professional advice how to convince their organisation’s management of the need to build governance, as well as how to build such governance on the basis of the P3O standard, avoiding typical mistakes and failures,
  • work in units typically called “project management offices” and would like to learn the P3O standards with which to ensure high effectiveness of implementing change initiatives.


There are no entry requirements for training participants.
Knowledge of project, programme and portfolio management, as well as PRINCE2®, MSP® and MoP® will be helpful.

We usually organise the exam on the last day of training.

Exam preparation:

  • 3 full samples of Foundation exams,
  • Foundation level questions after each module of the course.
