What is MSP?

MSP represents the market standard and the best practices of managing programmes.

It is used to effectively carry out business change management in the public and private sectors.

Many business initiatives consist of a number of projects that should be governed together to ensure coordination, cooperation and focus on a business goal. The governance of managing programmes is – similarly to that of project management – an important part of managing an organization. Managing entire programmes requires specialized methodology. MSP is exactly this kind of methodology

More about MSP

Every project within an organization should be implemented using project management methodology like PRINCE2®. It should be kept in mind that many big business initiatives fail only because they:

  • are implemented as singular projects using project management practices
  • are carried out as a group of disconnected and uncoordinated projects, each of which is implemented using the methodology of managing a single project.

In order to effectively carry out these larger transformational changes it behooves the organization to implement a programme. Through proper coordination, programmes will initiate and drive any number of projects which together will allow the organization to achieve its larger strategic vision.

Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®) is the flexible framework for managing, guiding and controlling tasks dealing with identifying, defining and implementing programmes. MSP is a practical aid to creating and maintaining a manageable programme environment, and explains how the programme should inter-relate with its projects. MSP also offers practical guidance on how the programme should communicate with higher management levels within the larger organization, which normally sees the programme as part of an overall change portfolio.

Several hundred organizations in many countries are already using the MSP standard to ensure the orderliness of their programme management.

Benefits of MSP

  • MSP simplifies determining the goals of programmes and identifying programme benefits. This includes taking over independent projects already being implemented that require coordination and modification
  • Defines the programme and shows how it will make changes in the organization
  • Helps to create a stable framework for monitoring and coordinating different projects being carried out within the programme
  • Ensures the controlled progress of the programme
  • Manages the influence of the programme on the organization (ensuring that the programme is always in-line with the organization’s strategy)
  • Focuses on achieving returns on investment and other benefits
  • Controls the closing of the programme.
