What is Facilitation?

FACILITATION is a way to achieve significantly better meeting or workshop results by uniting the people around solving a problem that is significant for them.

In this process the person called the Facilitator increases the efficiency of group’s work (by introduction of appropriate process) and introduces an atmosphere of understanding and cooperation.

As a result of the Facilitator’s activity we obtain better quality of decisions and solutions, in a shorter period of time, and all that in a friendly and inspiring atmosphere.

Facilitation is not a form of consulting or coaching, but may become an important element in management of a team, complicated task or project. The ability to facilitate is necessary for modern leaders, and it does not require special personal traits. You can learn to facilitate!

We call the meeting with independent Facilitator the Facilitated Workshop. During this workshop the facilitator takes care of efficiency of actions and the achievement of the set goal, with proper engagement of all participants. Facilitation tools allow you to draw the creativity and openness of your teams, helping you to solve even the most complex problems together.

Facilitated Workshops are recommended by the AgilePM methodology as a tool for increasing the efficiency of executive team communication and helping the entire project team make a better use of their skills and knowledge. The art of facilitating meetings allows even the most differentiated groups to work together and achieve substantial results in short periods of time.

When is it worth to use facilitation as a method for group work?

  • The team has the knowledge, but is unable to share it,
  • working meetings take far too much time
  • the problems to be solved are complex and require the cooperation of different specialists,
  • the execution of the solution developed by the team largely depends on the personal engagement of group members,
  • it is essential for every member of the team to feel responsible for the achieved results.

Can I become a Facilitator of my team?

YES, particularly when the group is willing to cooperate or already has experience of an agile working team (according to the SCRUM, AgilePM, Kanban standards). In such a situation even a basic level of training will allow for fast acquisition of skills, which will largely improve work in such a group and increase its efficiency. This training will also allow you to evaluate which behaviours are beneficial for cooperation, and which should be changed, and provide inspiration for further development and search.

How to become a professional Facilitator?

The process of becoming a Facilitator who will cope with every group and any circumstances is long (as is the process of becoming a Coach), and requires constant gathering of knowledge and experience. The ‘Basics of Facilitation’ training is a good first step towards working as a professional Facilitator. Even if after the training you will decide that this is not a career for you, the time spent during the training will not be lost.
