PRINCE2 is a world wide recognized project management method that is gaining widespread popularity. It places particular emphasis on the business justification of ventures, their organization and the responsibilities of individual roles within the project team, including orderly and logical planning by the project manager.

PRINCE2 is the quintessence of the British approach to project management, and has gained widespread popularity around the world, particularly in Europe and Asia.

This methodology can be used for any and all types of projects because it deals solely with the tasks of project management without directly dictating the nature of the work being done by the project team. PRINCE2 can therefore be applied even to specialized trades such as bridge construction, registration of pharmaceutical products, implementing IT systems or TV advertisements. The methodology of PRINCE2 is structured in such a way, that it can be applied to projects of any given size, from planning the enhancement of IT systems to building a stadium for World Championships. 

The methodology of PRINCE2 is an excellent platform for delivering projects in businesses and organizations of any size and trade. In a methodical way, it organizes the way a project is planned, implemented, closed and the results evaluated.

Agile is an advanced management approach. It may relate to any aspect of management, starting from teams through projects to programmes and portfolios. Agile may deal with small team management but also may help delivering a project in traditional corporate governance. 

Experiences collected from multiple projects show that the traditional (waterfall) approach to project management, in many cases unfortunately does not bring the expected results. The reasons may be as follows:

  • In the initiation phase of the project, the client is not able to precisely determine the products or their functionality that they expect, which significantly hampers or even prevents from planning the entire project.
  • Dynamically changing environment of the project during its delivery generates so many requests for change ('client constantly changing his mind') that at the end of the project we get something completely different than planned.
  • Ineffective communication in the project - there are actually two project teams coming from the customer and the supplier, which lodge on their positions, and then in case of problems they 'keep firing' each other using the ammunition in the form of paragraphs and contracts and their often far-fetched interpretation.
  • The solution delivered by the supplier includes functionality that is not used by the client then - 'because something had to be entered into a contract'.

As a result, projects do not end on time, the customerd do not receive what they expect, and the products are of poor quality. This entails a reduction in the return on investment (benefits) or delays its delivery. That's why organizations are looking for other, more flexible approaches to project delivery. However, for organizations that already have standards of formal project management, popular nowadays Agile approaches are dubious and their application appears to be risky.

Scrum is currently the most popular Framework in the family of Agile methods.

Scrum is frequently applied during software creation and development, but it is not limited to this area.

It puts a particular emphasis on the utilization of feedback information, from stage to stage, on self-organisation of teams, and most of all on the establishment of tested, working and usable “growths” in a product. All that is accomplished in short, usually 2-3 week long time stretches, called the “sprints”.

The method is described in the Scrum Guide – Rules of the Game, which was prepared and is updated by the Scrum creators: Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherlant. Contrary to traditional approaches, such as PRINCE2 or PMI Scrum has no complex management layer. This is why many authors describe it as a methodology for executive teams. TOGAF® (The Open Group Architecture Framework) is a universal, independent from providers standard that provides methods and tools for developing, implementing and maintaining corporate architecture.

TOGAF® offers a conception of building architecture practices in organizations. In the case of organizations wanting to implement or expand corporate architecture it is a great tool with which to build it. TOGAF® allows them to define appropriate architectural processes that take into account the organization specifics, name roles and responsibilities, determine the organization structure, define the structure of  architecture repository, and create templates of architectural products. It also provides many useful tools and technics with application examples.

TOGAF® enables planning, designing and controlling of changes in the organization in a consistent way, both on the IT and business levels. As the current state, the target state and the route from the current to the target state are all described, TOGAF® perfectly supports the implementation of transformation programs.

TOGAF® is a well-recognized standard which is growing in popularity. According to the latest estimates, its current share of the  world corporate architectural market stands at about 60%.

TOGAF® defines four architecture domains: business architecture, data architecture, application architecture and technical architecture. It also can be successfully used to create architecture based on, for example, the SOA concept.
